Ryan Hooey, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of seven and lost his vision due to diabetic retinopathy at 25. Ryan is the Program Lead for ‘Come to Work’ at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and has bachelor degrees in sociology, marketing and public relations.

Dr. Michelle Lane is a practicing optometrist in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and the President of the New Brunswick Association of Optometrists.

In this podcast Ryan Hooey shares his journey from diagnosis with diabetes to losing his vision due to diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Michelle Lane speaks to how optometrists are able to catch diabetic retinopathy at a very early stage and help prevent its progression towards blindness. We will also address whether current vision care plans provide adequate coverage for those with a diagnosis of diabetes.
